Brave the bandits and head North.

Knowing only a fool would attack a noble, you make your way North. You're only travelling for a couple hours before you're beset by the ruffians you had been warned against. "We'll be taking your coin," one says to you as they circle around.

"You can take my gold and earn a bounty, or let me go and I'll return the courtesy," you say with cocky satisfaction.

"Or," the bandit suggests, "we could take your life and your gold, and don't suppose we'll make no bounties that way."

"Don't be stupid," you say as they close in. Maybe that was the wrong response, because the leader quickly slides his dagger into your guts without any other reply.

You still get the last laugh by being broke.
