Panicked, you scan the streets and storefronts for any sign of life. There are no people anywhere, but you can't find any other life, either. There are plants and presumably microorganisms still, but you can't find a dog or a squirrel or even so much as a fly buzzing around the food which has been left unattended on counters and tables. It's almost as if everybody just stopped in the middle of whatever they were doing and left.
