Don't answer; it's a recorded message.

Rather than go along with the madness of answering a voice that cannot possibly hear you, you decide to play it sane and say nothing. Of course, if there were ever a time to answer a question posed by your voicemail, this would be it, while you're in the depths of an adventure crafted by Dream himself. You're clearly not the adventuring type, though. There's nothing this experience can teach you. So, rather than do anything exciting with your dream, you finish listening to your messages, hang up the phone, go to work, and live your spectacularly mundane life. You dream a whole lifetime of mediocrity, including your pencil-pushing job and chronically unsatisfying love life, until your final moments (which are also uninteresting, as you die at a modestly old age while dreaming that you are asleep). You wake up feeling as if you have lived a whole life but also as if you haven't done anything.

The mediocrity continues ad infinitum.
